Q.5: Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product ?

Question 7 Preliminary Task Analysis

In this specific shot we did here in our preliminary task we did a Tilted shot. I feel this shot is very dramatic due to the lighting you can see and as it tilts it introduces the main character Annika. However, despite liking the shot I feel it could have been better. Mainly because the camera is focused too much on the right, thus leaving to much empty space on the left. I think this is due to the fact that we were more new to camera types and detail compared to now. Also, I feel we lifted the camera from her shoes too rapidly.

In comparison to now, when I feel we have obtained more experience and understanding to make the quality of shots better to how they used to be.

In comparison, this is a recent shot taken from our title sequence. As you can see we have developed our skills as we have learned how to use a combination of tilted angles and camera effects. Overall we have improved the shot quality and techniques.

Evaluation - Question 6

What have you leatned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

While completing the task of making a 2 minute title sequence. Throughout the term we were given various tasks to do.

Above are the programmes and the equiptment that I used during the process of my short sequence.

We used a JVC camera to record our film, we then imported our shots onto final cut pro and edited it. We then made our film sequence and when we was happy with it, we transfered the file to sound track pro where I then made a soundtrack to back the final edit of our piece. After this, we went onto live type where we then made our titles to go with our film.
Throughout all my tasks, I have been using blogger so that there is a continuous update of my progress.

Evaluation question 6

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product ?

I have developed a variety of skills during the production of our title sequence. Throughout the term we have been given tasks which we had to use our learnt skills in order for us to complete the tasks.

These programmes, websites and equipment have been used correspondingly to create my final title sequence. For example the camera was used to film, while afterward my recordings were imported to final cut pro and edited. Afterwards, when the final piece has been edited i transferred it onto soundtrack pro and added the soundtrack for my title sequence. When this was finished, I used live type to make the titles. During the process i was using the blogger website to keep a record of all my progress in my lessons. In conclusion I have learnt a range of skills from learning how to operate and effectively use these programs. I have used them in conjunction with each other to create my title sequence.

Evaluation Question 3 & 4

I feel because our film is a low budget film it realistically would not be released by a huge global media institution. I t would be more likely for perhaps a low budget British media institution to distribute our film. Also, it might be likely for us to distribute our film ourselves by uploading it on to YouTube. I found a students work on the Internet. This is very important as it allows this student to increase the amount of people who can view it. Uploading films on the Internet allows it to reach more people and if it is on You Tube, many people can post comments.

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In the space of time that i have been studying As media i feel i have learned a significant amount of knowledge on technology. Before i joined the college i had only a faint idea of what the imac computers were capable of but now i feel i have a very huge amount of knowledge on what the imacs can do for example the applications on them . These applications include livetype which is specialised for making credits and fancy words, soundtrack pro thats specialised for making the sounds which wer used in our opening movie clip and final cut pro which is specialised for cutting editing and putting clips together.

Before we started making our media product our whole group took part in a tutorial in which the teacher showed us how to safely use the equipment such as the tripod and the JVC camcorder.
We also made use of several Internet sites such as IMDb which we researched real thrillers before making our own movies.

Final cut pro was especially essential to making our movie as the editing that we used in the movie all came from that application and in my opinion i think we managed to take full advantage of that software as the movies editing looked exceptionally good.

I feel the use of Soundtrack pro was also very good as it added more suspense to the whole movie and livetype was also an essential application that we used effectively in our movie.

To finalise i believe that i have learned a signicant amount about technology especially with livetype and soundtrack pro. I believe that with our collective knowledge of technology as a group we have made our movie a must see.

Evaluation Question 5

5) Who would be the audience for your media product ?

The audience for our media product would be young adults and adults between the ages of 15 and 30.

Shaniqua 18 is an up and coming stockbroker and loves going to places such as river island and staying in fashion aswell as going to the cinemas on her days off she never forgets her bag at home as she carries her pride possesions in them including her very stylish music based equipment for example her headphones. She aspires to be a model as she believes she has a unique fashion sense.

Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our film is based on a man of a middle class social group.

What we did was put our character in a stressing situation similar to those like the characters in photo booth.

The reaction of the characters in the films are different though. For our example; our character in our movie is shown more vulnerable, weak and afraid, whereas in photo booth, the main character is shown as a more confident, well groomed character.

This is a good contrast as many people may form a stereotype of how middle class men take on situations, dilemas and sticky prediciments. It is good to varey the responses and feelings of the character to stay original.

Evaluation Question 3 & 4

3 & 4 ) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why ? How will you attract/address your audience?

Here is a media product which another student has made and have decided to use youtube to distribute their product/movie sequence. They have successfully achieved around 13,000 views this shows that they are using the internet to appeal to a wider audience.

The institution that would distribute our film is a low budget company because of the financial funds that we used to make this movie opening. We will use ooh (out of home) promoting techniques to promote and attract our audiences through things such as posters ad's etc .

Evaluation Question 6

I have learnt a significant amount about technologies whilst making our title sequence. Before I joined this college I had not used a Mac Computer only a PC. I did not have access to the Mac computer or any of the new software's I have now used.
Before we began making our media product we took part in a tutorial in which he teacher showed us how to safely use the equipment such as the tripod and the JVC camcorder.
We also made use of several Internet sites such as IMDb which we researched real thrillers before making our own.

We used several technologies that worked together successfully in building our title sequence. For instance, we used Final Cut Pro to cut and present our title sequence. We then were able to import sounds, some ambient and dramatic of phones ringing, by using Soundtrack Pro. Also, in our title sequence we used a voice over which we were able to import in to Final Cut Pro and manipulate, taking every care to make sure the voice in the voice over was in keeping with the time of the action. Furthermore, we used Live Type which was highly important as it allowed us to import interesting word types in to our title sequence. In the end we included a red countdown effect on the name of our title sequence, Ransom. This was intended to reflect the theme, as the main character is running out of time.

To conclude, on a whole I feel that I have learnt well since joining this course. I feel my editing using final cut is not too bad, also I had not used any of the software's before making our title sequence, but now I have used it I feel it has really made our title sequence worth watching!

Evaluation of 3 & 4

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
How will you attarct/address your audience?

The media institution that will distribute our media product will be CANDI Studios. This is because CANDI Studios because our film is a low budget student film and CANDI Studios help to distribute low budget films.

CANDI Studios do not have links to big tv channels but they have links to small showcase cinemas that can hold just over 100 people at a time.

Our film will be released over the internet on such sites such as youtube or vimeo as we do not have a large budget to make our movie widely distributed onto tv channels or bigger cinema's such as Odeon or Vue.

As we are trying to appeal to people from a young adult group, we can advertise our fim via facebook or youtube as many people from the age range 18-30 have internet access.

Hopefully, with the success of our internet distribution; we could get some global viewers which could help promote our low budget film and maybe we could get more money to be able to globally distribute our film.

Evaluation question 3/4

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?

If i were to release my film, I would appeal to my audience using a range of technologies and advertising strategies.

In terms of advertising the film, the budget would be very low as the production company is independent and is low budget themselves. I would probably use the internet as the internet allows you to reach such a diverse audience in so many ways. For example I could use social networking sites such as facebook, twitter or even myspace to appeal to those audience who spend time on computers at work or at home. On social networking websites I could promote the film by creating events and inviting people
to screenings in cinemas etc.

Another way the internet could be used to market the film is through releasing a trailer or film previews on websites such as youtube. This would be efficient as it is free and can allow you to reach a vast amount of people which could then lead them to be encouraged to go watch the film and maybe even recommend it to friends.

On the internet using social networking sites in conjunction with video sharing websites could be successful as social networking sites can be used to upload videos from video sharing websites which then advertises to an even wider audience.

Furthermore, my film could be promoted through other media sources such as newspapers and magazines. Though I would probably advertise in local newspapers at first to do a trail to see the effectiveness of advertisement in the newspapers. Along with this, I could use magazines also to advertise by including pictures of scenes from the actual films and character profiles etc. I would maybe include in this type of media, a chance to win a ticket to watch for free, a showing of the film. This would allow me to get a base audience who could then recommend the film to family and friends.

In terms of showing the film, independent cinemas such as Rio and, The screen on the green. If the advertising is very successful and appeals to a much more wider audience or even a global audience, it could potentially be shown in larger cinemas such as cineworld.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

If we look at our own character from our title sequence and those from the films Phone Booth and Taken we can identify both resemblences in the characters though, also distinctions in them too. For example our character is portrayed as vunerable, when we compare to this to the main character featured in the opening of Phone Booth the two are totally opposing. Both characters in the title sequences are similar in the way that they are both from the same social class however one of them is confident while the other is quite reluctant in his actions. It is clearly demonstrated that both of them also are involved in a crisis that they themselves don't understand why and how they ended up in such a problem.

Likewise, our own character and the character from the film Taken are alike in the way they have been made victims to situations that involve some of their closest relatives. But our character challenges the reaction of the character in Taken. He does this by following orders and acting as inferior and defenceless whereas, in the film Taken, the character is the total opposite. In various ways the character in Taken is a development of the character in our title sequence.

Nevertheless, even their dress sense is similar in the way that they are both wearing formal outfits and a based in an urban surrounding.

Planning preliminary match cut exercise including storyboard

In our lesson we were given a task to film a match cut sequence of a person walking through a door and having a short exchange of dialogue with another person. Firstly we had to plan our ideas. In our group we had a combination of ideas on what types of camera shots, angles etc we should use and the scenario in which our sequence would be based on. We had an idea of a young lady in business secretly with Italian government but however she is working for British government also and she is risking her life in order to have business with Italian government. In terms of camera work we had to effectively choose the scenes in which we were going to include match cuts, close up shots, long shots, tracking and whip pan shots. Finally we chose to have this similar scenario of someone who is inferior working with someone who is a figure of authority secretly, taking the risk of being caught. We decided to film using a combination if camera shots and angles. We wrote up a storyboard of the shots to be taken and the events which would occur in each shot. The storyboard was used as guidance and also helped us to illustrate our ideas in an organised manner.

Evaluation Question 1

Me and my group feel that our title sequence has been inspired by many similar films. For example we identified Phone Booth as one of them. Mainly because it includes a phone box throughout the film similar to our title sequence which contains three different phone boxes throughout. This Link above is of the film Phone Booth and we believe it is similar to our title sequence.

This is a photo from phone booth of the leading character in a phone box, and on the right is our shot of Neto n a phone box in Tuffnel Park.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In a variety of ways, our media product has used aspects from other real film title sequences . Firstly we were inspired by the film phone booth. In the film phone booth we identified some particular camera shots and decided to use similar shots in our own. An example of the resemblance of shots is conveyed in the pictures below :

Secondly, when we compare these two pictures , we can establish that Colin Farrel, from the film Phonebooth, and Neto have similar attire. They are both dressed quite formal. Like from the film Phone booth we have used a black jacket. The black jacket is a connotation that something unfortunate is going to happen to the character. As we look as the emotions expressed by the two different characters there is a difference, in Phone Booth the character looks assertive in contrast to Neto who looks nervous and weary.

In these pictures we see the two characters are alike in the way that they are both distressed from thier situation.
